Application programming interface (API), or computer-to-computer communications, is game-changing technology for independent agents - and they need to begin to understand it now, says Ryan Deeds, VP, Technology at Assurex Global. Agencies must staff an IT department to "understand what APIs are and what they can do for their firms and how they can provide value," urges Ryan on this recording. And don't worry about having to write code, he adds. "Technology in five to 10 years won't be an IT guy, but a business solver who can take prepacked solutions and plug in with other prepackaged solutions." Ryan also believes that traditional agency management systems will have to evolve, since APIs are the way to compete with the insuretechs. "It's just negligence for agency owners to not understand APIs," he says.
