You'll get vintage, unfettered Doug Johnston in this recording as he retires after six decades in the insurance and technology business, almost exclusively at Applied Systems, the agency management system provider. Doug got interested in the industry when his father, an independent agent, took him to work one day and also showed him the computer room at Chubb Insurance, which was in the same building. He was hooked. That led to a long stint at Applied, beginning with the earliest years toiling away in the founder's house. Doug's dedication to Applied's brand - and a wicked tongue to go with that - would send some other industry tech operators into a tizzy. For example, when a salesman was trying to get a meeting with Doug at a conference, the response was terse, loud and overheard by many: "Lose my business card." At the heart of this storied career, though, is a fascination and passion for the independent agency system.
