In 2004, Tim Byrne and his brother were growing their Cape May, N.J. agency just fine. Then Hurricane Andrew hit. After Andrew, traditional admitted companies started closing down for new business, and Byrne was forced to use the non-admitted market. But there were problems operating in this market, the biggest of which was that the technology was slow (remember faxes?). So Byrne started Coastal Agents Alliance, selling just comprehensive replacement cost coverage for coastal homeowners, and utilizing online quoting. In this interview with Andy Simpson, Byrne tells the tale of how Coastal Agents Alliance was formed and how the MGA works with retail agents.
