In mid-April, members of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, the Big "I", made their annual pilgrimage to Washington to meet with elected representatives. Back home, they left agencies that, according to several reports, did rather well in 2013. Independent agencies reported growth in market share and profitability. Also, after years of decline in the number of agencies, the past two years have seen more than 1,000 new agencies started. So has this business success translated into political success in Washington? Bob Rusbuldt, president and CEO of the Big "I", shared his thoughts on independent agents' clout in Washington during his association's annual legislative day on Capitol Hill.
