Outgoing Louisiana Citizens CEO Favors a Team Approach
When John Wortman, the outgoing CEO of Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corp., the state’s property insurer of last resort, joined that organization in 2007 it was overwhelmed with claims and litigation resulting from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and beset by software woes and a bookkeeping debacle, among other things.
By all accounts Wortman, a seasoned insurance industry professional, has done a terrific job of leading the company back from the brink of disaster. Wortman says it takes a team approach to turn a company around and that starts with hiring a capable staff. As he prepares to retire as head of Citizens, Wortman shares some of other the lessons he’s learned in the process of rebuilding the company, as well as insights into issues Citizens still faces.
