Jason Cass, chair of the Independent Agents & Brokers of America’s Young Agents Committee, and owner of the JDC Insurance Group based in Centralia, Ill., and Brian Appleton, an independent agent based in Des Moines, Iowa, have a story to tell. These two young agents have recently launched a new website and series of podcast interviews to talk about issues important to the independent agency system. They hope to advance the insurance industry and the independent agency channel by doing so.

Both Cass and Appleton took some time to speak with Insurance Journal about a recent topic of discussion on their website www.AgentsInfluence.com. In this interview Cass and Appleton discuss the independent agency channel’s pay structure, why they believe it may be time to make a change, and why the industry’s compensation models may not be appealing to the younger generation.

In this podcast, Augie Ray, the insightful blogger at experiencetheblog.com, starts out a lively discussion with a key premise: “Social media is not about media but rather it is about business.” Social media is much bigger than just a communication tool, Augie says. He discusses the impact social media is having on the insurance industry—as well as the risk he sees of firms waiting on the sidelines, doing nothing. He serves up some savvy insights into the fast-evolving world of social media and covers such topics as the new sharing economy, changing attitudes around privacy, and the importance of authenticity and radical transparency—all of which have significant implications for our industry.

We have previously recorded On Point podcasts with both Jason Cass, Owner of JDC Insurance and Ryan Hanley, Director of Marketing at The Murray Group Insurance Services. Yet, having them both on this podcast is a special treat. Jason and Ryan are two of the most vocal young agents when it comes to advocating for positive change to move the Independent Agency System forward and meet the needs of the connected consumer. Listen as Jason and Ryan talk about the advancements they see taking place in our industry and the GROW Program they have created in response to agent and association requests. GROW stands for “Generating Revenue/Relationships Online Workshops.” As Ryan states: “We are past the early adopter stage. We are now seeing real and measurable results. We started GROW to provide other agents with the information they need to grow their business.” Also, Ryan and Jason offer opinions on the next important trends they see having an influence on our industry.

Listen to this podcast as Chip Bacciocco, new CEO of Project CAP, talks openly about some lessons learned with introducing an agent-consumer quoting portal as well as the renewed commitment to making this initiative a reality. Chip has a strong background in technology and agency production—and still holds his insurance license. It is important for independent agents to provide a “richer customer experience,” he says. He takes the role CAP is expected to play in empowering agents and insuring future success seriously. According to Chip, “CAP is not a complete answer.” Rather, he sees CAP working with many industry partners to provide a comprehensive offering of valued services to consumers.

Some topics are timeless and this is one of them. Peter and Rick caught up with Catherine Oak, founder and partner at agency consultancy Oak and Associates, to discuss the importance of having a well-crafted producer compensation plan. How much should you pay a producer? “It depends,” says Catherine. While that answer is not a surprise, she goes on to outline the variables that must be considered when formulating a successful comp plan that grows the firm, keeps employees happy, and creates value for owners.

While skid marks may be useful in auto crash investigations, fluid spills, paint transfer and crush damage are better indicators of how a motorcycle crash occurred.

After years of dwindling premiums, the property and casualty insurance industry managed to grow substantially in 2011. Independent agents and brokers hung on to their share of that market with some independent agency carriers gaining in market share by double digits, according to the newly released Property & Casualty Insurance Market study published by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America.
Independent agents still control a majority of the property/casualty market, writing 57 percent of all premiums, including a third of all personal premiums, the report revealed. Independent agents also continued to dominate commercial insurance sales. But where agents appear to be falling short is in the personal auto market where direct writers managed to grow their personal auto premiums 10 times faster than independent agency carriers. This challenge remains a concern and opportunity for the independent agency channel, says Madelyn Flannagan, co-author of the Big “I” report.
In this interview with Insurance Journal’s Andrea Wells, Flannagan discusses the study’s results and shares her views on why the next few years will be a great opportunity for agents to better understand the consumer and provide new ways to serve an increasingly diverse insurance buying community.

Independent agents should be getting some help with their personal lines sales from the soon-to-be-launched Consumer Agent Portal.
CAP, also known as Project CAP, is backed by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America Inc. (IIABA) and six investor insurance carriers — and promises big changes. Its backers hope that when the consumer agent portal is launched, it should help the independent agency channel recapture and grow critical market share in personal auto insurance — a world that’s driven substantially by digital marketing and sales.
Project CAP has had setbacks, acknowledges Charles “Chip” Bacciocco, the newly appointed CEO of Project CAP. The biggest has been the delayed live launch of the portal on TrustedChoice.com.
The portal was supposed to launch in 2012. But as of March 2013, it is still in development. Bacciocco would not reveal the total dollars invested by the Big “I” and its carriers on Project CAP but “a substantial investment has been made,” he told Insurance Journal. Despite the delay, supporters remain committed to the project, he says. All six founding companies remain strong and active supporters of Project CAP, and today 18 carriers in total have signed up to participate in the portal. In this interview with Insurance Journal’s Andrea Wells, Bacciocco discusses why the industry needs Project CAP and what’s to come for the organization and the Consumer Agent Portal in 2013.

Richard “Gordy” Bunch, president and CEO of The Woodlands Financial Group, readily concedes that starting a personal lines-focused insurance business in Texas in 2001 – while the state was in the throes of the “mold crisis” – may not have been the best of plans. Nevertheless, it has worked out well for him and the company he founded.
TWFG in 2012 had premium sales of more than $267 million, representing a 28 percent growth over the previous year, and the firm is targeting another 25 percent growth spurt in 2013.
Here, Bunch describes his unique business model and how TWFG has grown into the multi-faceted organization it is today.

If your firm struggles to find and keep trained and talented staff — or if you’d like to keep working after “retirement” — this podcast is for you. Work at Home Vintage Employees (WAHVE) is a unique staffing model providing remote, highly talented, and experienced employees to insurance firms . According to Sharon Emek, CEO and founder of WAHVE, what differentiates this staffing solution is the fact that a “perfect match” is created between the firm and employee. On this podcast, Sharon explains how the concept of “work” and “workforce” is changing. WAHVE is reinventing retirement for the Baby Boomer generation in the insurance industry.
