In this podcast, independent agency champion Stu Durland, Vice President of Seely Durland Insurance and Co-Chair of the Real Time Campaign, discusses the many excellent benefits his firm has realized by implementing Real Time agent-carrier workflows. Real Time is more than a technology. Rather, he states, “it is a workflow that leverages technology to provide operational efficiencies.”

And to help the industry see the value, on February 29, carriers, agents and brokers, associations, technology vendors and user groups are coming together to sponsor and participate in a National Real Time Day. Listen as Rick, Peter and Stu discuss the significance of the day and the planned activities.

North Carolina’s C.G. Caldwell joined the U.S. Coast Guard at age 18 right out of high school. He served in the health services field in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1990 until 2001, stationed on large medical ships in ports from New York to San Francisco. After leaving the Coast Guard, he worked in another hospital for four years before deciding he needed a change. In this interview with Insurance Journal’s Andy Simpson, Caldwell says the confidence he gained in the military made it possible for him to risk going out on his own and starting his own insurance agency. He advises other veterans to consider a career as an agent. This podcast and story are part of a series on veterans in the insurance industry.

Agencies must provide the right kinds of coverage for new and emerging risks. To do so, agents must stay on top of changes in coverage, new markets and much more. But despite all the new and sometimes exotic coverage options available today, the number one agency errors and omissions exposure has stayed the same for more than two decades. Sabrina Sally, senior vice president with Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, who leads the carrier’s U.S. agents E&O program, says the top threat to agencies remains the failure to procure coverage. In this podcast, Sally talks about the agency E&O climate today and offers a few tips on how agency owners can protect their firms in 2012.

In his first year as insurance commissioner of Oklahoma, John Doak has been a busy man.

Doak and the agency he leads have had their hands full implementing reforms in the workers’ compensation system, dealing with a host of natural catastrophes, encouraging insurers to offer more products and services in the state, and working with the governor and legislature to foster an “Open for Business” environment in Oklahoma.

A former insurance producer and agency principal, Doak believes in fostering a competitive, market-based approach to resolving insurance issues while continuing to serve consumers through outreach and regulatory protections.

In this On Point podcast, Chris Amrhein, Chief Fun Officer of Insurance is Fun discusses with Peter and Rick what it might mean to be an “agency of the future.” We all agree that the expectations of the connected consumer are placing new demands on the way we transact business. Demographic and diversity shifts are changing the face of both the consumer and the agency employee. Add the rapid advancements in technology into the mix and the entire world of insurance is being transformed. This discussion doesn’t provide a definitive answer to what the agency of the future will look like but it does begin to raise many of the issues that need to be addressed. (And stay tuned for more on this topic from Peter and Rick in 2012.)

If you are not familiar with ACT and the wide range of initiatives it is spearheading to improve agency workflow, you’ll want to listen as Jim provides an overview. “One of the goals of ACT is to research and evaluate trends that are having or will have and impact on independent agents and enable them to be proactive rather than reactive in response to new trends,” Jim says. For example, the newly formed Agency of the Future Workgroup will begin to research and discuss how the many cultural and societal shifts or transformations will influence the way agencies will need to operate to meet the changing needs of consumers. Jim also discusses how agents and carriers can join and participate in ACT.

Since 1993, the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (Big “I”) and Reagan Consulting have teamed up to investigate why some independent agencies do better than others even in challenging market conditions. The Best Practices Study has grown to become an industry standard for performance benchmarks in revenue and expense growth, profitability, employee productivity and other important measures. In this podcast, Insurance Journal’s Andrea Ortega-Wells talks with Madelyn Flannagan, vice president of agent development, research and education for the Big “I,” and Shirley Lukens, senior vice president at Reagan Consulting and lead consultant, about the history of the study, what growth strategies top performing agencies use in today’s market, and what tools agencies might use to improve their own results in the future.

For the past two years, Tom Minkler, CIC, vice chair of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA) and president of the Clark-Mortenson Agency in Keene, N.H., has been very busy spearheading one of the most significant initiatives undertaken in the Big I’s history. “It is our time to take back personal lines market share,” Tom says. CAP will be the vehicle that will make that possible. In this podcast, Tom explains the two separate components of the project. First, there will be a Web Services component, an education and marketing offering that will provide agents with the resources and tools necessary to attract the online consumer. The second component will be a consumer portal. Here, consumers will find a local agent and begin their online shopping experience. Tom sees this as a chance to consolidate and leverage the strength of tens of thousands of independent agents. It will give agents the chance to tell their story and sell the advantage of having a local agent who can offer choice and be an advocate in time of need. In Tom’s words, “CAP gives us a chance to have a national strategy but market locally.”

For property and casualty insurers and reinsurers the impact from 9/11 was substantial, amounting to insured losses of some $32.5 billion in today’s dollars. As we approach the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, sat down with Insurance Journal to talk about terrorism risk today, why the 9/11 event changed the way the industry views risk, why it’s important for the federal government to retain its role in covering terrorism risk, and how terrorism risk is changing today.
